Second Sunday

  • Erie Art Museum 20 East 5th Street Erie, PA, 16507 United States (map)

Join us for Second Sunday on February 12th from 2:00 to 4:00pm.

In celebration of African Heritage Month, visitors will be examining Kanga Cloths from East Africa. These cloths unite cultures and communities! For more than 100 years, they have remained one of the most popular cultural items across East Africa. In Kenya, the Kanga is a common thread that links and unites cultures, and individuals of all ages, races, ethnicities, and genders in the colorful, dynamic world of their designs.

The Erie Art Museum has one of the largest collections of these textiles in the world! Two particular Kangas in the collection are particularly inspiring. Their descriptions are as follows: “the beginning is difficult, but you must be patient and persevere” and, “all humans must help each other.”

In a time where it seems that there can be division between us, it is important to remember what unites us all. We invite you to also be inspired by these messages and create your own Kanga collage.
