Beginner Sloyd Knife Skills

Beginner Sloyd Knife Skills for Greenwood Carving

Class Description

Greenwood carving is a woodworking technique that involves using freshly harvested wood, which still contains moisture. This type of wood is generally easier to carve because it is softer and more pliable, making it a popular choice for creating items like spoons and other functional objects. A Sloyd knife is a type of woodworking knife designed for handiwork or crafts. It is part of the Sloyd educational system developed in Sweden in the 1870s to teach students woodworking skills and prepare them for future trades. The knife typically has a straight cutting edge, is easy to sharpen, and is used for carving, marking, and adding details to woodworking projects.

Join Folk Artist & Wood Carver Matthew Retkowski for a 2 hour hands-on workshop designed to teach the fundamental knowledge and skills needed to safely practice greenwood carving with a sloyd knife. This includes basic knife safety, blade theory, safe knife grips for carving, understanding wood grain, and practice time for a small carving project. It is recommended, but not necessary to have taken Greenwood Carving: An Overview of Tools and Techniques prior to taking this course.
