Altered Books as Intimate Spaces
Transform the pages of a book of your choice.
In this workshop with Dr. Sheila Lorenzo De la Pena, students will explore the fascinating world of altered books and discover how they can become intimate spaces for creative expression. By the end of this class, students will gain the ability to identify various applications for altered books, prepare their own set of altered book pages, explore the connections between the creative process of altering a book and metaphors of intimate spaces.
This workshop will take place Thursday, June 29th from 6:30 – 9 pm.
$55 for members, $70 for non-members.
Materials are provided, but participants may also bring additional media or mark making tools based on personal preference.
Book Selection: If it's the participant's first time working on an altered book project, it is recommended to consider the following tips when choosing a book:
Opt for affordable options, such as those available at thrift stores, aiming for a budget of $5 or less.
Select a book with a hardcover.
Look for sewn bindings instead of glued bindings commonly found in modern books. To determine if a book is sewn, open it to the center of a register sheet and look for threads. Sewn books typically have soft and "cottony" pages, indicating a higher cotton content compared to slick magazine pages. Avoid books with slick pages, as paint adherence may be challenging.
Tip: Books that open flat are easier to work with, so it is advisable to choose slimmer books whenever possible.
